McKINNEY, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' men's golf team shot a 292, its best round of the year, to take the lead after the first round of the American Southwest Conference Championship, but shot a 299 in the second round and are in second place after the first day of play at Stonebridge Ranch in McKinney.

The Cowboys led by a stroke over Texas Lutheran after the first round, but TLU shot an even-par 288 to take a 10-stroke lead with a two-round total of 581 into the final round on Tuesday. HSU is at 591, Mary Hardin-Baylor was in third place with a 601, McMurry is in fourth place with a 605 and UT-Dallas is in fifth with a 608.

Travis Brown led the Cowboys with a 75 and a 68 for a one-under par 143. It was the first round in the 60's for a Cowboy this season. He is in third place in the medalist race, four strokes behind Ryan Kiel of TLU, who shot rounds of 69 and 70 for a 5-under par 139.

J.C. Eagle and Davey Davis are each tied for sixth place after shooting 148's. Eagle shot 70-78 and Davis 71-77. Paul Schaub fired a pair of 76's for a 152 and Brian Laing shot 79-82 to round out the Cowboys' lineup.

HSU will close play with 18 holes on Tuesday.
