ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' men's golf team is in fifth place after one round at the Charles Coody West Texas Golf Invitational, which is being played at the 6977-yard, par-71 Diamondback Golf Club in Abilene. The Cowboys shot a four-over par 288 in the first round. HSU is in fifth place in the event in a field of 18 and Hsu is the only Division III non-scholarship school in the event. The other teams are all scholarship schools. Paul Schwab led the Cowboy effort with a one-under par 70 and is in a tie for sixth place. J.C. Eagle is in a tie for 18th after a one-over 72. Aaron Lesley and Ben Lindsay shot 73s for the Cowboys to round out the top four. Travis Brown shot a 78 as the throw-away score for the Cowboys. The 288 is eight stokes better than the Cowboys shot in any round last season. Cameron University leads the tournament with a 280, St Edward's is four strokes back and Abilene Christian and Texas A&M Commerce are tied for third with a 286. Blake Worden of Commerce fired a 67 to lead the individual race. The tournament will conclude with 18 holes on Tuesday. |
