Oct. 31, 2007
ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' men's soccer team will try to defend the American Southwest Conference title when it heads to Clarksville, Ark., for the ASC Soccer Championship Friday through Sunday.
HSU has won the last two ASC titles and will head into the tournament as the fifth seed, and it will have to pull off the feat of winning three games in three days again. The Cowboys were the first team to do that in league history last year. The University of the Ozarks (16-4) capped the regular season with five straight victories to earn the right to host the 2007 American Southwest Conference Men's Soccer Championship Tournament. Ozarks, which won the ASC championship in 2003, will make its eighth straight appearance in the tourney. The University of Texas at Dallas (13-3-2) locked up the No. 2 seed and the other first-round bye. The Comets have not lost a game since September 22. The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (11-6-1) wrapped up back-to-back tournament berths for the first time in program history and will be the No. 3 seed. Mississippi College (11-4-1) is the No. 4 seed, followed by two-time defending ASC champion Hardin-Simmons University (8-7-1) and the University of Texas at Tyler (11-6), which enters postseason play for the first time after serving as an NCAA provisional the past four years. Friday's first-round matchups will be MC against HSU at 11 a.m., with the winner getting Ozarks in Saturday's 11 a.m. semifinal. UMHB and Texas-Tyler will duel on Friday at 2 p.m., with the victor going against UTD at 2 p.m. on Saturday in the semifinals. The championship game is slated for 1 p.m. Sunday. The ASC tournament winner earns an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students. The ASC complimentary pass list used in the regular season will not be accepted. Follow all of the action at http://www.ozarks.edu/athletics/msoccer/2007Tournament/default.asp |
