ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team made a push at Howard Payne, but the unbeaten and second-ranked Lady Jackets had the answer, as the Cowgirls fell 72-60 in American Southwest Conference action at the Mabee Complex on Saturday. The Cowgirls fell behind 51-32 when Hope Horetz hit a turnaround shot in the lane, but HSU fought its way back into the game with a quick 12-0 run to make it 51-44 with 10:12 to play. In the run, Mollie Brawner hit a pair of 3-pointers and a short jumper. Howard Payne came right back and built the lead to 59-44 with an 8-0 run, but HSU had one more run in them. This time it was a 14-6 run that cut the deficit to 65-58 with 4:57 to play. Bo Warm had three 3-pointers in the run. Down the stretch HPU pulled away with big shots, including a pair of 3-pointers from its All-American guard Meia Daniels, who had struggled shooting most of the day. The Cowgirls fell to 16-5 overall and 13-4 in league play with the loss. Howard Payne moved to 21-0 overall and 17-0 in league play. Brawner led the Cowgirls with 15 points and Bo Warm and Lindsey Newcombe each had 13 points. Stacey Blalock led HPU with 24 points, Kimberly Hoffman had 17 and Daniels finished with 15. |
